Culture: The Legend of the Kikoi

There is a legend that speaks of a time when Arab merchants traveled to the East African coast, bringing with them various goods, including a versatile garment known as the sarong. This piece of fabric, practical yet simple, captured the interest of the local Kenyan communities. They adopted and adapted it, creating what is now known as the kikoi.

Over time, this fabric became more than just a useful garment. Local artisans, skilled in their craft, passed their knowledge down through generations. They began weaving intricate patterns and colours into the kikoi, each design holding meanings linked to lineage and social status.

The kikoi, enriched by a blend of African, Arab, and Persian influences, became a key element of Swahili culture. This blend of cultural elements is also the inspiration behind our company name, 'Amaari,' which means 'gracious' in Swahili and 'moon' in Arabic.

Today at Amaari, we have taken our own approach to the history of kikoi by incorporating elements of travel and culture into our brand. Our products are crafted to be both functional and stylish, perfect for modern adventurers who appreciate cultural depth in their everyday items.
