Euro Summer: Guide to Montenegro

Rewa Handa
An insider’s guide to Montenegro, with the best tips on where to stay, eat, and explore.

When my family first mentioned Montenegro as a vacation spot, I was apprehensive. It’s not a place you hear about often, or at least it wasn’t three years ago when I first went. But let me tell you, Montenegro is such a hidden gem. I loved it so much that I ended up going again the following year. Its stunning landscapes, charming towns, and pristine waters are truly unforgettable. Here’s my personal guide to exploring Montenegro, from where to stay and eat to the best spots for swimming and adventuring.

Where to Stay?

The Chedi Lustica Bay

The Chedi Lustica Bay is a a beautiful property with a private beach. You can swim in the sea and enjoy the breathtaking views from your room. I highly recommend this hotel for its convenience and charm. It's within walking distance of many restaurants in Lustica Bay, but keep in mind that it's about a 20-minute drive from Porto Montenegro, where most of the action happens.

Regent Porto Montenegro

The Regent Porto Montenegro is perfectly situated in the heart of Porto Montenegro, close to all the restaurants, bars, and shops. While it doesn't have a beach, the hotel makes up for it with a fantastic pool. If you prefer being in the center of the hustle and bustle, this is the place for you.

Where to Eat?

Let me start by saying that Montenegro isn't the most vegetarian-friendly destination. If you're a vegetarian, you might find your options limited to pasta and mashed potatoes. However, if you enjoy seafood and meat, you're in for a treat!

One

Located in Porto Montenegro, One offers delicious Mediterranean cuisine. The pasta here is quite good, but the real stars are the seafood dishes. The fresh, locally-sourced ingredients make every bite a delight.

Murano

Situated in the Regent Porto Montenegro, Murano is known for its exquisite lamb shank. The restaurant offers a refined dining experience with a menu that showcases the best of Montenegrin cuisine. However, it is on the more expensive side of restaurants.

The Rok Beach Bar and Restaurant

Located on the beach at The Chedi, The Rok serves the yummiest pizza and fruit salads. It’s a great place to grab a bite while enjoying a day at the beach. However, be prepared for the bees, as they seem to love the beach as much as we do!

What to Do?

Boat Trip to the Blue Cave

A boat trip to the Blue Cave is an absolute must! Jumping off the boat into the blue water is a highlight – the water is gorgeous and not cold at all. While there isn't much sea life to see, the beauty of the cave and the thrill of the swim make it a memorable adventure. Also fyi the pic has no filter - that’s really how blue the water is

Explore Old Town Kotor

Old Town Kotor is a magical place with its beautiful churches, quaint jewellery and souvenir shops, wine bars, restaurants, and ice cream parlours. The cobblestone streets and historic architecture make you feel like you’ve stepped into a fairytale. Plus, there are cute kitties everywhere, ready for pets and play. It’s a charming experience that captures the essence of Montenegro.

Our Lady of the Rocks, Perast

For a deeper insight into Montenegro's cultural heritage, a visit to Our Lady of the Rocks in Perast is essential. This church, located on a man-made island, is only accessible by boat. According to legend, the island was created over centuries by local sea-men who laid a rock in the bay after each successful voyage.  The church has a museum with numerous artefacts, paintings, and tapestries that tell the story of the region’s history and culture.
